It’s was sad enough: the day that thousands of freedom-loving Chinese were crushed under the brutal heel of the Chinese Communist Party in the aftermath of Tiananmen Square. It’s an even sadder day when an American President gives credence to that same Communist dictatorship by being its guest at the Olympics, particularly in light of the recent Tibetan demonstrations.
Gao Xingjian stands as a beacon for what China could be: a tolerant, open and thoughtful society. Unfortunately, Gao’s light has been dimmed by an American president who enables the Communists’ abuse of power while fostering his own.
